Small Squares: May 2021

Small Squares: May 2021

I probably say this every year but May is my most favorite month. It is always gorgeous weather, it is my birthday month, it is Mothers Day – basically all happy, good things. This particular May was SUPER special. It brought us Simon’s long awaited and anticipated mission call for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints to the Nairobi, Kenya mission AND his high school graduation! It felt like we did a lot of celebrating this month and that felt really good. Here are a few pictures from our Small Squares for May 2021!

Simon ran in his last high school track meet EVER. I was a little nostalgic about it, considering the thousands of hours we spent watching him over the years but he was really happy to close the door on a great running career. Thanks to two years of travel club running with the Thunderhawks which brought him to three National Junior Olympics, Green Valley Middle School, three years Varsity at Rodriguez High School that brought him all the way to State as a sophmore and one final Varsity year of high school at Placer High. It has been so much fun to watch my boy run. I personally do not think this race is the last time we will see him toe the line, but we shall see… He finished his last high school mile race with a 4:41. His best time ever in the high school mile was a 4:30 and his best 2-mile was a 9:42. So much fun to watch this kid race.

Sam got his long awaited Covid-19 vaccine. By the end of March both Sam and I, Simon and Sophie all had our full doses and Sadie and Sebastian had their first dose.

I took a much needed getaway back to Fairfield to spend the weekend with the Clawsons. There was some favorite food, long chats, cool Green Valley breezes, drives, walks and crafting. Just what I needed with my people.

Sophie had a blast working at In and Out and we had fun visiting to see her in action!

We watched the springtime goats knocking down weeds on the other side of our property. We were more than a little obsessed with the goats.

On the morning of my birthday I made a beeline over to my favorite local place to get avocado toast, The Pour Choice. It is truly the very best; it even has candied bacon on it. This toast wast the best way to start my birthday.

I had one of the worst migraines of my whole life a few days before my birthday. It was really hard. It was only the second time ever that a migraine drove me to tears. Seriously, it was awful and felt endless. It lasted about three days. I had about six hours on my birthday pain free and we made the most of it. My family made my day so happy with yummy treats and takeout from PF Changs. It felt good to go to Anthropologie and just spend time here with my people. Sophie, as always decorated for my birthday and I am really going to miss that when she is at college and can’t do it :(.

We continued to have a fantastic time at our gym. Especially Sophie. This gym has been a happy, almost sacred place to come particularly over the past few months. We are getting stronger and having fun. It’s the best group of people. 9 Round Rocklin is where IT IS AT!!

We took these photos on Mothers Day after church and I love them! It was also the day that Simon advanced in the Priesthood in preparation for his mission and mission call so it was very special.

I’m going to do a whole post on Simon’s mission call and high school graduation but wanted to have a few photos here on Small Squares. The first photo above is from the day he opened his call to Nairobi, Kenya and the second is a few days later when we took photos for his high school grad card, holding the Kenyan flag. Such a special time for him and for our whole family. SO awesome.

Finishing up the month of May, Simon graduated from high school! He was SO happy to be done, especially after a pandemic year of school. It was a beautiful day and we celebrated big time. More in a special post to follow.

Happy May 2021!
