Small Squares: November 2019

Small Squares: November 2019

November was filled with family time and prepping for our first floor renovation. My parents came out in mid-November for Thanksgiving (you can read all about our Thanksgiving time here), our older two had a constant flow of their friends in and out of our house (just the way I like it), and we spent A LOT of time figuring out paint and flooring choices for our renovation. What a blessing to be able to do a renovation that includes a wall removal, new paint, new floors, new baseboards and new light fixtures BUT what a TON of work. Throw in wanting things to be festive and beautiful for the holidays and I hit peak anxiety about all things by about November 10. I just had to decide to let some things GO. No, we were not going to bake and take cookies to friends and neighbors this season. No, we would not make it to see the Oakland Temple Christmas lights. No, we would not be able to attend every party we were invited to. But YES to sleeping and eating well, yes to family time, yes to embracing the concrete subfloor and weird paint test splotches all over the first floor and endless reorganizing projects that were so needed and appreciated. Yes to the Hallmark movies and annual Lord of the Rings marathon, yes to sitting with friends, yes to long convos with our teens about their classes and their friends and their troubles, yes to playing with the dog and watching the rain and fixing the fence.

It was a slightly different November (and December) than we have had in years past but it wasn’t bad – it was great. These photos are all over the place because that’s how our November was – all over the place 🙂

We got the Christmas tree up early but after the construction dust that followed it was down before Christmas. We got a great month out of it 🙂
Went with these friends for brunch in St. Helena to celebrate another friends birthday. It was raining a little hard in this photo and this was the best we could do!
Happy birthday, Jackie 🙂
Black Friday shopping where I found my dream pants at Anthro!
Sophie ran from July until November in terrible pain. Initial x-rays back in July and then again in November revealed nothing but when we did the MRI there it was – stress fracture to her navicular bone in her foot. She was immediately put into a boot for day and a splint for sleeping at night. She made it through her entire cross country season running in pain and pushing through a stress fracture – how much fast will she be when she isn’t injured?! Sophie’s face in this photo kinda says it all….
Right before we ripped out all of the tile floors we bought this beautiful farmhouse table from World Market and enlisted Simon and Sophie’s friends to help Sam build it. The teens did good 🙂

I made killer good soup (take on Olive Garden’s Zuppa Toscana Soup) which made things feel less like a construction zone and more like a home 🙂
Just a little construction dust.
The beginning of the discovery of dry rot in our foyer. NOT a happy moment…
Sam testing out his new tile removal toy…
Seb, Simon and Hunter hard at work…
Simon and Hunter (and some Sam) took out all of the tile in our kitchen/laundry/bathroom and foyer and to say it was hard and created the biggest mess of all time is a huge understatement. They did a great job and tile is from Satan.
Puppy was cute and worked a few jobs 🙂 This one was for Smart Bones.
We ate at Taco Express 2-3 times a week, easily.
I kind of love this photo of me preparing to host Thanksgiving dinner for 17. Makes me happy.
Simon won the whole dang 5K at the Turkey Trot and we as his parents “accepted” his prize of $300 on his behalf (NCAA restrictions for student athletes who may run in college/be recruited are pretty hardcore)
