New glasses, new year. Also newish spine 😂. Today is 4 weeks since emergency spinal surgery and I am starting to really feel like me again. The nerves in my lower left leg go a little crazy each day and I can tell they are slowly waking up. My stamina is better. Pain is less. Back to work at @sutterhealth in two weeks and looking forward to seeing my people again. Before everything fell apart with my spine back in

Before everything fell apart with my spine back in late December, I got to meet an artist I have admired for quite awhile. @moffettfineart has created these incredible sculptures (on display at a beautiful gallery in Park City, Utah) that depict what it is like to experience a disability, human frailty, love and connection. Sam and I met with him one afternoon in December to talk art and his process and these pieces that really resonate with me. Ryan has MS; I have Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis, so we could bond over our shared experiences with crummy autoimmune diseases. I am so grateful for the time he took with us and for the opportunity to meet him and see his work up close! Today was Day 1 of really rehabbing my spine and left leg. It was so much harder and more humbling than i wanted it to be. One hour on the treadmill, slow speed, just 2.35 miles. 3 weeks ago this would have been nothing. Today I was really able to feel out the weakness in my left leg and my limitations. I’m posting this here to have a record of what my rehabilitation is like and so that I can eventually look back and see how far I’ve come. The spinal nerves are really something special and I have a lot of new appreciation for people who have had the kind of surgery I did or who are rehabbing their ability to walk. It is sobering and hard work and no fun. #spinalhealing #l4l5 #spinalinjury

Happy 26th anniversary to us. We went on our first date in August 1996, decided to get serious about it in February 1997 and got married today, 26 years ago. Best decision I ever made with the best man. He isn’t that active on social media but he knows I adore him ❤️

A few photos from the past 7 days recovering from spinal surgery. First of all, I’m basically done with the walker.

Second, today I went out on errands (with @sophiestubbertt driving since I’m not cleared to drive yet) and walked 2000 steps. Which I’m told is really good this soon after surgery.

Three, today I told my lovely PT lady that “I am officially all done being a spinal patient!”…and then 10 minutes later it was painfully obvious I am not done yet 😂. Mind over matter only works half the time.

I’ve been wearing real clothes again and it has been so nice.

Pain is very minimal. The biggest issue is what is called neurological fatigue in my left leg. It is going to take time and work to improve and patience has never really been on my resume of skills.

All in all, I’m doing way better than I was when I came home from the hospital a week ago tonight. #spinalhealing #spinalsurgery

I broke down and accepted my VERY temporary walker

I broke down and accepted my VERY temporary walker and gave it the Sara treatment. Some yarnbombing, a few tassels, a rice bag made by the talented @aydan.wilie to hold my phone and now it feels more like…me. I’m not loving this current version of me. Who wants to be a spinal surgery patient? Who wants a leg that is weak and numb? No one I know! But maybe now when I move around this will feel less like a dumb piece of medical equipment and more like a happy, positive tool to get me better faster.

And side note: I sneezed 🤧 for the first time today since my surgery and I felt those staples REALLY well. There should be a rule that your body isn’t allowed to sneeze for at least two weeks after any surgery. #spinalsurgery #yarnbombing

Well, the last 7-10 days have not gone the way I w

Well, the last 7-10 days have not gone the way I would have ever expected. I had emergency spinal surgery on Sunday on my L4 L5 and had two discs removed. Things went kind of downhill with my left leg function the day before (if you followed my stories you watched this play out). By Saturday night I had very little control of my left foot or lower leg and the nerves were going haywire so I was admitted. I was seen by a neurosurgeon a few hours later and he didn’t mince words; he said he was doing surgery now and that once he opened me up he would have a better idea of how bad it was. At one point he thought I had a tumor wrapped around one of the nerves but thankfully that wasn’t the case. Being wheeled into the OR was really overwhelming and I was so scared. Definitely shed some tears before they put me out. When I woke up I apparently asked over and over if it worked 😂. Then I stayed in the hospital for two more days. Now I’m home and the reality of all of this is becoming clearer. My recovery will be long. My left leg will take time to come back. I need a walker right now that I am so angry about I refuse to take the tags off of it. My spine hurts. The muscles and nerves in my back are freaking out (which is normal). PT wiped me out today and I hardly did anything. I’m on short term disability from work which is so bizarre. This all happened so fast and became acute so quickly that I STILL can’t wrap my head around it! I typically have a positive if pragmatic attitude about hardships but my optimism is fairly weak right now.

Thank you to my wonderful tribe of friends and family for holding me up and making me laugh over the last 7 days. I really appreciate it. Keep it coming.

Went to see our phenomenally talented friend @nathan.pacheco.music last night (hadn’t seen him in years!) and it was fantastic. I had texted him earlier in the week and asked him to sing my all time favorite song Nessun Dorma and he very generously did it at the top of the show. Nathan is the most talented tenor in the world and hearing his gorgeous voice was just what I needed. Also apparently he and Sam are going to be BFF’s with Sam driving their tour bus 😂.
